Eastlake Chair - 2017

Before

Upon first reciving the chair, inspection and research was done to properly evaluate its age, an appropriate historically influenced fabric choice, and how much damage it may have sustained. The chair was found to be a historical eastlake chair from the Victorian Era, making it about 150 years old. The fabric was moldy, the interior batting was falling apart, the frame was out of square, and the webbing was no longer in place

During

The chair was first stripped down to its frame and then glued and clamped to help get it back into square. From there the webbing was stretched, the springs were hashed and stitched, and hessian was stapled in to cover the springs. New batting was added to the top and a lovely new period appropriate fabric was stretched and stapled over it all. The frame was then touched up with stain where scratches had been and was polished. Gimp and tacks were added because of their historical style on the chair.

Finished Product

Over 60 hours of work were put into reviving the chair into a semblance of its former glory. During the process, it was found that tufted buttons were common on this style of chair.
