The Medium
SceniC Concept - Opera - 2017
3/8" Scale Model Photos
The Medium is a chilling one act opera chronicling an experience that a fake psychic has with real spirit. The model was the first attempt to employ practical lighting through the use of wiring light strands into the walls and the floor. It also made use of a Cricut cutter to create the vintage motel sign on top of the room.
Research- Interior
Originally set in the 1920s in a small apartment, the concept was taken into a new direction to add a flair of horror to a modern audience. The psychic's setting was now a run down roadside motel in the 1960's, where they could run their ponzi scheme and then move on to the next town without being noticed. A major influence on the design and feel of the motel is the 1980's Kubrick film The Shinning, as seen in the iconic carpet pattern and the room number 237.
Printable Model Pieces
Over 10 different 11x17 pages were created to make the base printed elements for the 3/8" scale model.
Research - Exterior
The exterior of the motel had to be blustered with snow and falling apart at the seams. Icicles were hung off the sign to show that a physiological storm had manifested itself into a physical one. The motel's name is Motel Lamia after the Greek myth of a woman by the name of Lamia who eats children, which the psychic does metaphorically.
Draftings
A ground plan was created in AutoCAD to detail placement of major props and blocking.
