Song From the Uproar - Cincinnati Opera

This book was commissioned during my time at Cincinnati Opera as a props intern for the production of Song From the Uproar. The opera, which is based on the real life events of poet Isabelle Eberhardt, contains a journal that Isabelle uses to write her poems. I used a white PVC base which I then measured and cut with a jagged angle to simulate the real leather cut of pigskin. I then painted and aged the PVC faux leather piece to appear as aged pigskin and added a painted felt piece to the interior to give it the real weight of leather. I then printed registers of custom printed pages that appeared to be handwritten and stitched them into the faux leather exterior and added embellishments to give it character.

Pieces were cut, hand stamped from a leather stamp tool, and then dyed and sealed. The pieces were then punched to be ready for stitching along the outside edge. Registers were made for the interior and coptic stitched into place.
