Horizons of Gold
SceniC Concept - musical - 2018
1/4" Scale Model Photos
Horizons of Gold is a new musical with a sweeping score. A heartbreaking and timely tale about two women pulled together by fate in the wake of The Great Depression while dust storms ravage the west. The model was the first attempt to employ projections on a small scale to help enhance the set and change the scenes.
Research- Artistic Influence
The style of the piece lended itself to a colorful approach to the sweeping score, so influences were pulled from the regionalism art movement and the works of Grant Wood, John Rogers Cox, and Thomas Hart Benton.
Projections - Computer Rendering
Over 12 projected scenes were created as working folders in Photoshop and then mirrored through a projector onto the model pieces. Supplementary lights were placed around the unit to blend the non-projected scenic elements and actors.
Research - Historical Photographs
The period was well documented thanks to photography greats like Dorothea Lange, who took extensive pictures of the life and landscapes of the american west during the dust bowl and great depression. Her work was incredibly influential in making sure that the props and pieces were historically accurate.
Projections - Surfaces
In order to allow for a smooth transition of light and projections, a gradient gray was utilized to emulate a dust storm.
Draftings
A ground plan and section were created in AutoCAD to detail placement of major props and blocking.
